How to choose a puppy of Alaskan Malamute: recommendations of a specialist
Before choosing a malamute puppy, once again weigh the pros and cons.
Ask yourself important questions and get sincere answers to them.
In general, the choice of a Malamute puppy follows the same rules as the choice of a puppy of any other dog.
However, there are features characteristic of this breed.
Remember that malamutes are large, strong dogs that require a serious approach and intense physical exertion. It is not easy to deal with them if they have not recognized your superiority. Therefore, for a beginner, unsure of himself or excessively hard or, on the contrary, a soft person, the breed is not suitable. Also, do not take malamute if the family has children under 5 years old or elderly people: in a fit of feelings, a malamute can easily knock them down to play.
If you need a riding malamute, the puppy's parents must be working. But remember that this breed was not bred for speed competitions. They are heavy trucks, not sprinters.
Alaskan Malamute is still a rare breed in Belarus, so you may have to be patient to wait for your puppy.
Decide if you want to have a bitch or a dog. Each has both pros and cons.
Males were forced to show considerable activity in the search for bitches and in defending the right to continue the clan. Therefore, they are more cocky, stubborn and love to poke their nose everywhere. The sense of self-preservation is practically not developed. Parenting and training will require much more time and patience. But still, if your pet sees a "lady", he is able to completely forget about you.
Males of Alaskan Malamutes are quite pugnacious, and their brawls can result in serious injuries.
But at the same time, the males are larger, more powerful and spectacular.
Bitches are easier to communicate, more affectionate and obedient, more careful. But they also like to sort things out with their fellow tribesmen.
Keep in mind that during estrus, the behavior of the Alaskan malamute female bitch changes dramatically. And your pet can go in search of the groom, completely ignoring your desperate calls.
If you decide to get a dog for shows and breeding, remember that there are drawbacks that can close the path to the ring for your pet. This must be considered when choosing a puppy. For example, blue eyes, so popular now with huskies, are considered a disqualification in Malamutes.
